Testing Stations

Three testing stations in our main physical space in Craigie Hall, running PsychoPy for the presentation of visual (including video), audio, and simple text stimuli. Used for everything from simple judgement collection to self paced reading, cross modal lexical priming, and video-based truth value judgement tasks. One station is also equipped with an external hard drive containing several BYU corpora of English. All are networked to secured file space at the University. Python 3 for data compliation and R for data analysis are also installed. Since 2020, much of this work is shifted to web-based studies, though the lab is still available and is a hub for launching studies and analyzing data.

Eye tracking

The head-mounted rig is decorative these days. Through the Language Research Centre in the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literature and Culture, we can book access to an EyeLink II system, with 1000 Hz sample resolution using a chin-rest, or 500 Hz resolution allowing participants free movement. This can be used for reading tasks, or visual world paradigm tasks.

Sound-attenuated booths

Also bookable through the Language Research Centre, two sound attenuated booths are available. Both are suitable for the recording of audio stimuli for studies to be run in the main XS lab, or online. One booth is equipped with a keyboard, monitor and microphone inside, connected to an external control station. This can be used for studies where participants need to produce speech.
